Substitute Opportunities

Individuals who hold a bachelor's degree and are interested in serving as a substitute teacher may apply through the Ashtabula County Educational Service Center (ACESC). Qualified applicants must meet Ohio licensure requirements and complete the required background checks.

Substitute cooks are an important part of our Food Service Department and help ensure students receive nutritious meals each day. Responsibilities may include food preparation, serving meals, maintaining kitchen cleanliness, and assisting with other food service operations as needed.

Substitute custodians help maintain a clean, safe, and welcoming environment for students, staff, and visitors. Responsibilities may include cleaning classrooms and common areas, setting up for events, performing light maintenance tasks, and assisting with the overall upkeep of district facilities.

Who Can Apply?
You may apply for a 1-Year Multi-Age (P-12) Temporary Non-Bachelor’s Substitute Teaching License if:- You do not hold a college degree, but
- You meet the educational requirements set by Jefferson Area Local Schools (JALSD).
License Facts
- Valid for one semester in any subject/grade (extensions need board approval).
- Must have a current background check on file.
Step 1: Application/District Interview
- Submit the JALSD substitute application (available online or at the Board Office).
- An Administrator will contact you to schedule an interview
Step 2: Background Check
- Schedule a background check at Ashtabula County ESC (request a copy sent to JALSD)

Step 3: Apply Online
- Log in (or create) your OHID account.
- Go to CORE – Educator Licensure and Records.
- Select Apply for NEW Credential → Substitutes → Temporary Non-Bachelor’s Substitute License.

Step 4: Meet with BOE Office
Once your license has been issued, contact Angela Lockwood, Payroll, at 440-576-9180 ext. 1612 to set up an appointment. Bring:- Substitute license
- Background check
At your meeting, you’ll:
- Complete payroll forms
- Learn how to use the substitute assignment app
Step 5: Start Subbing
- Once set up, you may begin subbing immediately.
- You’ll be added to the next Board agenda for official approval; in the meantime, the Superintendent can employ you.

Substitute paraprofessionals support students and assist classroom teachers throughout the district. Individuals interested in serving in this role may apply through ACESC using the link below.

Substitute secretaries provide essential support to our schools and district offices by assisting with daily operations and helping ensure a positive experience for students, families, staff, and visitors. Responsibilities may include answering phones, greeting visitors, managing records, and providing general clerical support as needed.
